RWI Red Tricky words Red Words are phonetically irregular words. They are quite simply words that can't be sounded out. If you sound them out they come out all wrong. As part of your child's phonics session they will be taught red words, with an explanation of what makes the word "Tricky" by saying "Tricky letter(s)". These words will then be in the story book they are reading matched to their phonics ability.  Your child should practise sight reading these words. Once they can read these words on sight they can practise spelling them.
