Inclusion
Every child belongs. Every child participates. Every child can achieve.
At Broomwood Primary School, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that every child has the right to belong, participate and achieve, regardless of their starting point, individual needs or the barriers they may experience.
We recognise that children do not all need the same things in order to succeed. Our role is to understand each child, identify barriers as early as possible and make appropriate adaptations so that every pupil can access an ambitious curriculum and the wider opportunities available within our school.
Our Approach to inclusion
Inclusion at Broomwood is not something that happens somewhere else or only for children with SEND. It begins in every classroom with high-quality teaching, strong relationships and an environment designed to anticipate and respond to the needs of our children.
Teachers know their pupils well and adapt teaching, resources and the learning environment so that children can participate successfully alongside their peers.
We recognise that barriers to learning can arise for many different reasons. These may include special educational needs or disabilities, communication and language needs, disadvantage, social or family circumstances, emotional regulation, sensory needs, attendance or previous experiences. We therefore seek to understand the whole child, rather than focusing simply on a diagnosis or label. This reflects our Inclusion Strategy, which recognises that barriers can arise through the interaction between a child’s needs, experiences, curriculum, learning environment and wider circumstances.
Belonging and Relationships
Belonging is central to our approach. We know that children are more able to learn when they feel safe, understood and valued. Our relational approach is informed by our understanding of trauma and attachment, emotional regulation and sensory processing. We use approaches including Zones of Regulation to help children understand their emotions and develop strategies to regulate themselves.
At Broomwood, we accept all emotions, but not all behaviours. We support children to understand and manage their emotions while maintaining clear, consistent and appropriate expectations for behaviour.
Our aim is to develop children’s confidence, independence and ability to participate successfully in learning and in the wider life of our school.
