Forest School

At Broomwood Primary School, we are proud to offer a rich and inspiring Forest School provision within our school grounds. Forest School is an educational approach built around long‑term, regular sessions that take place outdoors and support children’s holistic development. These sessions are led by Mrs. Powell, our Level 3 qualified Forest School Leader.

Our Forest School allows children to explore, imagine and learn in a natural environment, helping them to grow in confidence, independence and resilience. We believe that nature is not just a location for learning — it is the classroom.

What Is Forest School?

Forest School at Broomwood is:

  • Child‑led and play‑based
  • Hands‑on, involving shelter building, simple tools, nature exploration, and observing wildlife
  • Designed to build confidence, resilience, social interaction, and emotional wellbeing
  • Focused on the learning process, not academic outcomes
  • A complement to classroom learning

Forest School Provision

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Children in Pre‑school, Nursery, and Reception take part in weekly Forest School sessions throughout the year. They explore the outdoors in all seasons and all weather conditions, developing curiosity, independence, and a love for nature. Sessions may include a theme, but are usually guided by the children and their interests.

Key Stage 1 (KS1)

Children in Year 1 and Year 2 take part in weekly sessions for one term each year:

  • Year 1 — Autumn Term
  • Year 2 — Spring Term

At this stage, children build on the skills developed in Early Years. Activities include safe tool use, den and shelter building, and the introduction of fire in a safe and supervised way.

Key Stage 2 (KS2)

KS2 children continue to access Forest School through project-based learning often linked to sustainability. This gives older pupils opportunities to develop environmental responsibility, practical problem solving skills, and teamwork.

Forest School Awards

We are currently developing some Forest School Awards for children to work through during their sessions. This will encourage children to try new things, be observant, work alone and as team, and develop skills and knowledge.
