Equality

Our school serves a richly diverse community and is committed to promoting equality, inclusion and high aspirations for all pupils. We are proud to welcome children from a wide range of social, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and we recognise that this diversity is a strength of our school.

A significantly higher-than-average proportion of our pupils are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM6), currently 46%, and 22.42% of pupils are identified as receiving SEN Support. In addition, 11.08% of our pupils are Children in Need (CIN), reflecting the complex and varied circumstances of some of the families we serve. While the proportion of pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL) is close to the national average at 25.90%, the linguistic, cultural and ethnic makeup of our school community is highly diverse.

We recognise that these characteristics can present both opportunities and challenges, and we are committed to removing barriers to learning, participation and achievement. Through inclusive practice, targeted support and a strong focus on wellbeing, we work to ensure that every child feels valued, respected and able to succeed. Our equality objectives reflect our commitment to fairness, belonging and the celebration of difference across our whole school community.

The Equality Act 2010 requires us to publish information that demonstrates that we have due regard for the need to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to tackle issues of disadvantage and underachievement of different groups.

Broomwood will take pro-active steps to advance equality of opportunity, foster good relations and eliminate discrimination or harassment across all the protected characteristics (age, race, gender re-assignment, disability, marriage and civil partnership, religion and belief, pregnancy and maternity, gender and sexual orientation) within the school community.

The information provided here aims to demonstrate that we give careful consideration to equality issues in everything we do. "Due regard" ensures that we work towards eliminating discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act

We will eliminate discrimination and other conduct prohibited by the Act by:

  • Adoption of appropriate Equality Policy and objectives
  • Implementation of a behaviour policy which ensures all children feel safe at school and which addresses prejudicial bullying
  • Reporting and monitoring all racial and prejudicial incidents
  • Regularly monitor the curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of our pupils and promotes respect for diversity and challenges negative stereotyping
  • Ensuring teaching is of the highest quality to ensure all pupils are given equal entitlement to success
  • Ensuring pupil progress is effectively tracked with interventions carefully planned wen necessary
  • Ensure all pupils have the opportunity to access extra curricular provision
  • Listening and monitoring the views and experiences of pupils and adults to evaluate the effectiveness of our work

We will advance equality of opportunity by:

  • Using information to identify underachieving groups or individuals and plan targeted intervention
  • Ensuring participation of parents/carers and pupils in school improvement
  • Listen to parents/carers and pupils

We will foster good relations by:

  • Ensuring the school is a positive member of the local community
  • Ensuring equality and diversity are embedded in the curriculum and in collective worship
  1. To deliver a coherent, inclusive curriculum model which supports achievement for all pupils due to effective analysis of race, gender and disability needs identifying priority trends and pupil group provision needs.
  2. To deliver an improved understanding and application of tolerance and diversity across wider school and community life.
