The Seaside

The Seaside

 

Our new topic for the Summer term is The Seaside! Get your smart sunglasses and thinking caps packed and ready to learn about the different areas of the curriculum through this super sunny theme.

Our New Text Is...

As writers within Literacy we will be:

- Reading, performing and writing seaside poems based on onomatopoeia

- Reading the story 'Hello Lighthouse' 

- Describing the characters and settings that appear in our story through the use of adjectives, verbs and adverbs.

- Planning and writing logbook entries in role as the lighthouse keeper

 - Developing our vocabulary by using our new words in our stories to engage the reader.  

 

As Mathematicians we will be:

  • Describing position, movement and turns
  • Telling the time to half past, quarter past and quarter to the hour
  • Telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes
  • Measuring and comparing mass in grams and kilograms
  • Measuring and comparing volume in millilitres and litres
  • Measuring temperature accurately
  • Reading scales

 

As Scientists we will be:

  • Learning to describe the structure of a fish and naming some common types of fish.

  • Exploring the life of the famous marine biologist Rachel Carson.

  • Learning to describe the structure of amphibians and naming some common types of amphibians.

  • Learning to describe the structure of reptiles and naming some common types of reptiles.

  • Learning to describe the structure of birds and naming some common types of birds.

  • Learning to describe the structure of mammals and naming some common types of mammals.

  • Recognising the basic needs of animals to survive

  • Exploring plants and animals that live in a sand dune habitat and how they are adapted to this environment.

  • Exploring plants and animals that live in a rock pool habitat and how they are adapted to this environment.

  • Exploring plants and animals that live in a coastal cliff habitat and how they are adapted to this environment.

  • To recognise that some foods and drinks contain ingredients that are not good for our bodies.

 

As Historians we will be:

  • Exploring what going to the seaside in the past was like.

  • Asking questions and finding answers about holidays in the past.

  • Learning about what people did at the seaside in the past.

  • Exploring how and why holidays have changed over time.

 

As Artists we will be: 

  • Learning about the famous artist Eileen Downes.

  • Exploring how to cut, fold/overlap, glue and trim materials

  • Designing and making a beach collage

  • Evaluating our final piece of artwork

 

As Design Technicians we will be:

  • Learning about different types of bags

  • Exploring the life of a famous bag designer Cath Kidston

  • Researching and testing different ways of joining materials

  • Learning how to sew two pieces of fabric together

  • Designing and making a beach bag

 

As part of our studies of Religious Education and PSHE we will be:

  • Asking the big question what does it mean to belong to a faith community?

  • Exploring different religious symbols and meanings.

  • Learning about different religious traditions.

  • Discussing our 'good and not so good feelings' and our 'big feelings' and how they impact our behaviour.

 

As Musicians we will be:

  • Learning the lyrics to a well-known melody

  • Learning to play a tuned instrument along to a well-known melody
