THE WORLD AT WAR
This half term we are going to be learning all about World War II.
In history we are going to be focusing on what life was like for the children of Britain throughout World War II. We will look at life during the Blitz and research the impact that air raids had and the causes of evacuation. We will also be looking at the reasons behind rationing and some of the things the people of Britain did to cope with food shortages.
Within our English and Guided Reading we will be focusing on the novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. We will use this moving novel to introduce the children to the fate of the Jewish people during WWII. It will also feature as a stimulus for our own writing in response to its key morals and messages.
In Maths we will be focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages before moving onto some algebra before the ½ term break.
In geography, we will be looking at how land use changed in response to World War II as well as researching the impact this conflict had on the populations of countries around the world.
Finally, our science topic this term is focusing on healthy lifestyles. We will be looking at the impact that food choices, smoking, alcohol and drugs can have on our bodies development.
Don't forget to stay active! We are still running 3 times a fortnight- Week A- Monday/Thursday and Week B- Thursday- and we will be sending home the children's personal bests on their homework.
Homework is sent out on a Tuesday/due in on a Monday. This consists of a rotation of literacy, spelling and maths activities but it is really important that the children have time to read a little bit every night.
This half term will be ending with our Fantastic Finish for the topic which is a trip to the Stockport Air Raid Shelters. This is a fantastic visit and something the children really take a lot away from. Year 6 will be visiting on Friday 1st February.
