Rise of the Robots - Summer 2

Picture 1

For Summer 2, our new topic is 'Rise of the Robots'. We will be learning about robotic, exploring and discovering related facts through Science, D.T,  I.C.T, History and more!

As scientists we will:

  • identifying common appliances that run on electricity
  • constructing simple electrical circuits, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers
  • identifying whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery
  • recognising that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit
  • recognising some common conductors and insulators

As Historians we will

  • understanding why the Industrial Revolution was important to Britain.

  • exploring how the Industrial Revolution changed the landscape and economy of Britain

  • recognising the significance of cotton spinning on the North West of England.

  • understanding the significance of steam trains during the Industrial Revolution

As I.C.T technicians we will:

  • creating a toy made from Lego that will run using a computer software (Lego WeDo)
  • using sequences, selection, and repetition in LEGO WeDo to create a set of inputs on our 'dancing birds'
  • using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognising acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identifying a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact

As Design Technologists we will:

  • identifying the different features of a torch
  • designing and making different types of switches, linked to our knowledge from science
  • designing an object to meet the design brief (to make an object to help the Iron Man see in the dark) using a circuit

Our learning will culminate in our trip to the Museum of Science and Industry for our Fantastic Finish. We will explore Circuits and electricity further and deepen our understanding of the uprising of technology during the industrial revolution.

In LITERACY we are going to be focusing on two main writing genres - Fantasy Stories and Choral Poetry! Our main text will be The Iron Giant by Ted Hughes

In MATHS we are going to be revising many aspects of the Year 4 curriculum, including the 4 operations, fractions and shapes!
