Reception Hyland

Welcome to Reception SH

Autumn term 2

Welcome to Reception SH. Your teacher this year is Miss Hyland and your teaching assistant is Mrs Crompton.

Welcome to our class page! Thank you for visiting us. We firstly want to tell you that we are so proud of how well the children have settled into Reception life. They are all working so hard and are having so much fun exploring and learning new things everyday! This term we are exploring the big question 'Is everybody's home the same?'. We began our topic by going on a walk around our local area. We had so much fun spotting different types of homes and learning the name of each type.

As part of our big question, we have also been exploring our weekly questions. These have included: "Who lives in a castle?" and "Who has a home under water?". The children have been very busy constructing different houses, investigating materials to build the best house, designing and labelling houses and exploring characters from different topic stories.

Phonics

At our school, we deliver phonics sessions using the Read, Write, Inc synthetic phonics scheme. The children have began their daily phonics sessions. We are currently learning Set 1 sounds, which include 'm, a, s, d, t, i, n'. For more information please visit our phonics page, which can be found under the 'curriculum' page.

Literacy

We always base our literacy learning around our topic question. This will give the children lots of opportunities to develop their literacy skills through exciting and creative activities. We will be completing a 2 week writing task every half term, enabling the children to develop their writing skills.

Numeracy

We use the White Rose maths scheme to support our planning of numeracy sessions. The children have been very busy and working very hard during their focused sessions. This term, the children have been very busy exploring numbers 1-10, beginning with a focus on one number each day. We have been practising our counting skills by counting a range of natural objects from the environment, including pine cones and conkers. This is now helping the children to learn how to order numbers and find 1 more and 1 less from a group of objects.
