Personal Development

At Broomwood Primary School, personal development is central to our vision of helping every child to achieve, believe and succeed for a brighter future. Our values of Nurturing, Commitment, Respect, Togetherness and Welcoming underpin the way pupils learn, behave, contribute and belong.

Personal development is the overarching provision through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and experiences needed to become confident, healthy, safe, informed, active and responsible citizens. It includes PSHE and RSE, SMSC, British Values, safeguarding and keeping safe, physical and emotional wellbeing, relationships and character, preparation for later life, pupil leadership and enrichment.

Enrichment is a distinct strand within this wider personal development offer. It provides purposeful experiences beyond, and alongside, the taught curriculum that broaden horizons, develop interests and talents, build confidence and belonging, and enable pupils to participate in the life of the school and wider community.

Our context matters. We recognise that some pupils, including those experiencing disadvantage or with additional needs, may have fewer opportunities outside school. We therefore seek to provide a rich universal entitlement, remove financial and practical barriers wherever possible, and provide targeted support so that enrichment is genuinely accessible to all.

What we want a Broomwood Child to leave with:

  • Be safe: recognise risk, understand boundaries, make safe choices online and offline, and know how and where to seek help.

  • Be healthy: understand physical and mental health and use age-appropriate strategies to support wellbeing and regulation.

  • Build positive relationships: show empathy, kindness and respect and understand the features of healthy relationships.

  • Know themselves: recognise emotions, strengths, interests, needs and areas for development.

  • Show character: demonstrate commitment, resilience, responsibility, integrity and confidence to try new things.

  • Respect difference: value people with different faiths, cultures, families, backgrounds, needs, views and experiences.

  • Belong and contribute: understand that they are part of Broomwood and wider communities and that their actions can make a positive difference.

  • Have a voice: communicate ideas, listen well, express views respectfully and participate in decisions that affect them.

  • Lead and take responsibility: experience meaningful opportunities to support others, organise, represent and influence positive change.

  • Be prepared for later life: develop independence, aspiration, communication, teamwork, problem solving, financial awareness and digital literacy.

  • Experience the wider world: encounter arts, culture, music, theatre, nature, outdoor adventure, sport, community action and new places.

  • Discover interests and talents: have opportunities to find activities and strengths that may continue beyond primary school.
