We noticed in school that children were using the word "gay" as an insult both on and off the football pitch. As part of our anti-bullying film project children came up with the tag line "Being gay isn't a bad thing, so don't call bad things gay!" We believe that homophobic language is as unacceptable as racist language and so we record and deal with incidents in the same way. We respect and celebrate diversity at Broomwood Primary School.
The work the children have done is starting to be recognised by other organisations, and we were recently asked us to showcase the homophobic anti-bullying DVD at an event held at URBIS; this led to us being mentioned in an article in The Guardian (see link below) for our work on this subject.
Well done Miss Hawkins and all the children involved in the making of the video, especially those children chosen to represent the school at the event at URBIS - you are a credit to our school!
