Monstrous Mountains and Raging Rivers


Our new topic for the spring term is Monstrous Mountains and Raging Rivers. Strap on your hiking boots, inflate the canoe and get ready for a rip-roaring adventure. We will be exploring the different areas of the curriculum through this exciting and engaging theme.


As Geography experts, we will:

  • Revise our knowledge of world continents
  • Use atlases and interactive maps to locate the position of major world rivers and mountains, focusing on the location of the source and mouth of the rivers as well as countries that rivers pass through
  • Learn how contour lines and colour coding is used on maps to represent the elevation of land, using this knowledge to locate world mountain ranges.
  • Locate world rivers and mountains.
  • Examine the features of the upper, middle and lower course of a river.
  • Observe the features of the water cycle.
  • Understand differences through the study of physical and human geography
  • Understand significance of rivers and mountains in terms of settlement, land use economic activity.
  • Use key vocabulary in relation to rivers and mountains.


As Scientists, we will:

  • Know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution and describe how to recover a substance from a solution.
  • Use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated.
  • Give reasons based on evidence from fair tests for the particular uses of every day materials
  • Demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes.
  • Explain that some changes result in the formation of new materials and that this kind of change is not usually reversible
  • Compare and group together every day materials on the basis of their properties


As Artists, we will:

  • Create printing blocks using relief or impressed techniques
  • Use layers and overlays to create new colours and textures
  • Produce intricate patterns and textures
  •  Research the work of a print artist and discuss their processes
  • Mix colours to express mood, divide foreground from background or demonstrate tones
  • Explain and justify preferences towards different styles and artists


As Design Technicians, to build our bridge, we will:


  • List tools needed before starting the activity, using the correct terminology
  • Record ideas using annotated diagrams, using researched information to inform decisions and combine modelling and drawing to refine ideas
  • Use models, kits and drawing to formulate ideas, sketch and model alternatives
  • Cut accurately and safely to a marked line
  • Use a bradawl to mark hole positions
  • Use a hand drill to tight and loose fit holes
  • Cut strip wood, dowel and square section wood accurately to one millimetre
  • Join materials using appropriate methods
  • Stiffen and re enforce complex structures
  • Use appropriate finishing techniques for the project


As Computer Technicians, we will:

  • Develop an appreciate of links between geometry and art 
  • Become familiar with the tools and techniques of a vector graphics package
  • Develop an understanding of turtle graphics
  • Experiment with the tools available, refining and developing their work as they apply their own criteria


We are Vloggers

  • Become familiar with vlogs as a medium
  • Create a sequence of vlog posts on a theme
  • Incorporate additional media
  • Develop a critical reflective view of a range of media


As Musicians, we will:

  • Internalise and record sounds
  • Know that sounds can be made in different ways
  • Explore, choose and organise sounds and musical ideas
  • Play tuned and un-tuned instruments
  • Rehearse and play with others


As Explorers of Religious Education, we will:

  • Record and name some key features of places of worship
  • Find out what the believers say about their places of worship
  • Make connections about how people feel about places of worship in different traditions
  • Select and describe the most important functions of a place of worship for a community
  • Give examples of how places of worship support the leaders in difficult times
  • Present ideas about the importance of people in a place of worship


As individuals who value learning about the wider world, we will:

  • Learn that there are basic Human Rights shared by all people and all societies
  • Know that there are some cultural practices which are against British law and Universal Human Rights (such as FGM)
  • Know the importance of keeping personal boundaries and the right to privacy
  • Explore and critique how the media present information
