Negative numbers

Good morning Year 6!

Yesterday we found out about negative numbers and tried out some arithmetic questions using our knowledge. Today we are going to use this knowledge to solve some reasoning problems.

A lot of reasoning problems which use negative numbers are about temperature and have graphs or pictures of thermometers, so make sure you look at the picture and read the scale carefully.

Remember:

  • Numbers don't just stop at zero. When you count backwards from zero, you go into negative numbers.
  • Positive numbers are more than zero: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.
  • Negative numbers are less than zero: -1, -2, -3, -4, -5, etc.
  • A number line can be used to order negative and positive numbers.
  • Zero, 0, is neither positive nor negative.

Have a look at the attachment and try the questions….
