Autumn 2

FIRE

Literacy

To begin this half term we will be writing exciting shape poems linked to fireworks and fire. The children will be learning about the features needed for poems and so we will be looking at alliteration, rhyming, similes and using powerful verbs and other language before creating our own shape poems at the end of the unit.  Our second unit will be fictional narrative based on the Great Fire of London. We will be following a three week plan to read a text, write predictions and finally write our own story.

Numeracy

- Add and subtract numbers with up to 2 digits

- Money

- Multiplication

- 2x, 5x and 10x tables

Science

In Science we are going to be continuing looking at materials. Within these sessions we will be carrying out different investigations to check the suitability of certain materials for specific uses. We will also be looking at how a famous scientist and designer used his knowledge of materials and their properties to create a useful object we all still use to this day.

History

In History we will become History Detectives and examine clues, pictures and artefacts to find out about the past.

We will be learning about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. We will examine the rhyme 'Remember, remember, the fifth of November' to find clues before retelling the story of Guy Fawkes through drama.

We will also be finding out about the Great Fire of London using evidence such as fire equipment that was used in the Great Fire and the diary of Samuel Pepys.

Geography

In Geography we will be answering the big questions Where do I live?  How do I know?.

We will be locating the four countries of Great Britain on the map as well as learn the capital cities. We will also be thinking about the different types of environment we have within our country and begin to discuss what environment we live in ourselves. Finally we will focus on London and learn a few of the famous landmarks that can be seen there.

Computing

In computing we are going to be creating greetings cards in preparation for upcoming celebrations. Children will practice their typing skills to add messages as well as create their card front. In addition they will learn how to accurately search for images, copy these and paste them onto their final greetings cards.

Art

In art we are going to study the Cubist artist Pablo Picasso. We will learn about Picasso, study the use of colour to show mood in pictures and the use of shape to create a cubist picture. We will then use what we have learnt to create a Picasso inspired self-portrait in front of a scene from the Great Fire of London.

Music

In preparation for our Christmas Play we will be learning several songs to share during our performance. We will be learning how to project our voices, enunciate and sing as part of a group.

RE

In RE we will be:

  • Exploring the question: What is a Muslim and what do they believe?
  • Investigating the meaning of different religious artefacts.
  • Asking questions and finding out more from a Muslim visitor.

PE

In PE we will be doing gymnastics with Mrs Peacock on a Tuesday. We will also learn movement through dance where we will choreograph wonderful dances for our fantastic upcoming Christmas play.
