For our first topic of year 6, we are going to be learning about Amazing Africa! In geography, we are going to be learning about the continent of Africa and comparing it to our own. We will be using different geographical skills to name and locate places as well as look at some of the human features of the different countries.
Within music we are going to be investigating the different styles of music from around the African continent as well as looking at some indigenous instruments. We will us this information to compose some of our own African inspired pieces, developing these through the use of ICT.
We will be linking our topic to science by exploring the classification of animals and plants as well as highlighting why certain plants and animals are adapted to different environments. Through our study of classification we will also be looking at the Darwinian theory of evolution which will transport us to Ethiopia and the cradle of humanity.
Moving to more recent history of Africa we will be looking at the development of the slave trade and how this impacted on Africans that remained on the continent as well as those who were transported in such a barbaric fashion. We will also focus on famous Africans from history which will culminate in a biography of Nelson Mandela which will be developed through our English lessons.
