We have planned to cover the following topics this year:

Houses and Homes
This half term we will be reading the fabulous text 'The Way Back Home' by Oliver Jeffers. The children will be making predictions about the text, using inference to make judgements about the character based on Oliver Jeffers illustrations. We will be exploring the events that take place within the story and the children will come up with their own ideas of how to help the boy. The children will be writing speech bubbles and retelling the story through one of the characters perspectives. Our next text will be traditional tale 'The Three Little Pigs', which is also linked to our Houses and Homes topic. We retell the story and the children will identify the language features of the text, such as 'Once upon a time' and 'happily ever after.' We will also read alternative versions of the text, such as the tale of 'The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig'. The children will identify adjectives, nous and verbs, and they will use them to create their own narrative. We will continue to incorporate finger spaces, capital letters, full stops, cursive handwriting, question marks and exclamation marks.
Phonics- During this term the children will have their National Phonics Assessment, whereby they will read a selection of real words and pseudo words (made up words). We will continue with our daily phonics sessions. Please continue to practise your sounds and high frequency words at home.
In maths we will work on our addition and subtraction skills, involving a range of scenarios and problems. We will continue to use number lines and concrete objects to support our learning. We will work on multiplication and division. We will continue to practise counting forwards and backwards in 2's, 5's and 10's. We will also look at measures, which will include finding the length, height and weight of items.
We will learn about animal habitats, microhabitats and plants. We will learn how the different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants. We will also identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants.
We will learn about the lives of significant people within different time periods, two explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ranulph Fiennes.
We will learn about Antarctica and we will compare the environment to our own.
We will be using a paint programme to develop a range of skills.
We will be designing and making a home for an animal.
We will study the work of Hundertwasser. We will be learning comparing the artist's work and we will recreate our own artwork using his style.
Spring 1 and Spring 2
Our topic this term is The Circle of Life
Literacy- Spring 2
This half term we will be looking at non-fiction texts about African animals. We will be learning about the features of a non-fiction text e.g. the heading, sub-heading, facts, captions, pictures, contents page and index page. The children will research their own information and they will play their own information text about African animals. We will also be reading the Flip Flap Safari and Flip Flap Jungle by Axel Scheffler. The children will create their own mixed up wild animal that has arrived at Chester Zoo. They will create a newspaper report about their new animal. Phonics continues to be an important part of the children's learning and we will continue with daily phonics sessions. Please continue to practise your sounds and high frequency words at home.
Mathematics- Spring 2
In mathematics we will be looking at finding a half and a quarter of shapes and numbers. We will continue to practise counting forwards and backwards in 2's, 5's and 10's. We will also start to look at money and the value of coins. The children will develop skills when paying for an item and getting change through a range of role play activities.
Literacy- Spring 1
Our first book this term is The Bog Baby a non-fiction text. We will use our listening skills to extract information about a character/setting from a text to create and write a description. We will be writing instructions looking at how to set them out and the use of bossy verbs. Our second text will be Jack and the Beanstalk looking at the main characters and retelling the story. We will be writing labels, captions and sentences. We will also be extending our sentences using connectives such as and, because, but. Within SPAG we will continue to focus on using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces between our words. In addition in the context of writing a instructions we will be looking at colons and commas. When we retell the story of Jack we will be adding the suffix -ing and -ed depending whther we are writing in the present or the past. We will practise our phonics, reading and writing set 2 and 3 sounds within words including split digraphs and alternative spellings for the vowel sounds for example e, ee, ea, e-e and y.
We will be using the handwriting scheme 'Letter Join' to develop our cursive handwriting using leaders and joiners.
In Mathematics we will look at telling the time o'clock and half past, addition, subtraction, simple multiplication and division working beyond 20.
We will continue to practise counting forwards and backwards to 100 in 2s, 5s and 10s.
ICT - Creating a story book adding text and photographs. We will also using presentation software to insert pictures of African animals, sorting and categorizing and answering binary questions.
Design and Technology - the children will be designing and making a sandwich, thinking about healthy eating.
Science - we will be investigating and comparing life cycles of different animals and each class in KS1 will have a different animal/insect to observe changes over time. The children will also be looking at how they have changed over time.
RE - We are finding out about the sacred books in the Christian and Muslim faiths, differences in how beliefs are practised. We will be learning the reasons why we celebrate Easter.
Geography - We will be setting up a weather station to monitor seasonal changes and daily weather conditions within the local environment and comparing to different cities around the world. Identifying and locating the seven continents. Identifying what physical and human features within the environment and locating on a map. Looking at the impact of human activity on the natural environment particularly in relation to an animals habitat.
PHSE - We will look at developing and maintaining good relationships and living a healthy lifestyle.
MUSIC - We will be listening to the Carnival of the Animals by ‘Camille Saint-Saens’ and learning about the composer. We will compose our own piece of music based on an animal choosing instruments to create a specific sound effect.
ART & ICT - We will learn how to use a paint program to create a piece of art.
FRENCH - In French we will practise holding a simple conversation in French, greeting one another, introducing ourselves, asking how are you.... Bonjour! Je m'apelle ... Cava? Counting to 20 and asking for a quantity, we will also learn animal names in French.
Autumn Term 2- Fire Fire
We will be focusing on a fiction text and reading The Gunpowder Plot in Literacy. We will analyse the author's vocabulary choices. We will be learning to retell the story and we will be writing recounts from the story. Within SPAG we continue to focus on using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces between our words. In addition, we will be introducing the suffix at the end of a word. We will practise our phonics, reading and writing set 2 and set 3 sounds within words.
We will be using the handwriting scheme 'Letter Join' to develop our cursive handwriting using leaders and joiners. This term the focus letters are the round letters, e.g. c, a, d o, q, e.
We will be learning about measures, which will include mass, capacity and length. We will also develop our knowledge about shape (2D and 3D).
We will be learning about the Great Fire of London and the Gunpowder Plot.
We will learn the names of the countries and parts of the UK. We will also identify London and Manchester on a map. We will learn the names of some of the landmarks in London.
We will be using paint on the computer to make a Christmas card.
Within music we will be learning our songs for the Christmas play, Lights, Camel, Action!
We will learn basic greetings and the names of Christmas items.
We will be taking part in anti-bullying sessions. We will be learning how to be a good friend and how to treat one another with respect.
We will be taking part in multi-skills sessions with Mr Busby.
We will be learning about festivals and celebrations. We will be learning about Diwali which is the Festival of Light.
We will be learning our songs for the Christmas play. We will be learning two dances to go with the songs.
Autumn Term 1- Toys
We will be focusing on fiction texts and reading Toys in Space by Mini Grey in Literacy. We will analyse the author's vocabulary choices. We will be writing labels, captions and sentences describing characters, the story setting and making wanted posters. Within SPAG we will be focusing on using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces between our words. We will practise our phonics, reading and writing set 2 sounds within words.
We will be using the handwriting scheme 'Letter Join' to develop our cursive handwriting using leaders and joiners. This term the focus letters are the long ladder letters l i t j u y.
We will be developing our understanding of place value, addition and subtraction generally working within 20 but where appropriate extending to 100.
We will continue to practise counting forwards and backwards to 100.
We will be investigating toys throughout history, comparing past and present toys.
We will be being photographers looking at photographs online and learning how to take good photographs, editing our photos and creating a portfolio of our favourite images.
We are finding out about people in our class, their culture, beliefs and celebrations.
We will be investigating different types of material and their properties. We will look at the life and work of the scientist Charles Mackintosh and making a waterproof coat for a teddy.
Design and Technology
We will be designing and making a moving puppets with a lever mechanism.
We are learning how to work together as a class and how to follow the class rules. We are also learning how to be respectful to others.
We will be taking part in Street dance with Becky. We will also be learning a range of multi-skills.
