World Book Day on Thursday 1st March. Children can come to school dressed as their favourite book character and parents are welcome to come to school at 2.45pm to read with the children.

Welcome to Year 1 JW

 

 

 

 

Spring 1

Our topic this term is The Circle of Life

 

Literacy

Our first book this term is The Bog Baby a non-fiction text.  We will use our listening skills to extract information about a character/setting from a text to create and write a description. We will be writing instructions looking at how to set them out and the use of bossy verbs. Our second text will be Jack and the Beanstalk looking at the main characters and retelling the story.   We will be writing labels, captions and sentences. We will also be extending our sentences using connectives such as and, because, but.   Within SPAG we will continue to focus on  using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces between our words. In addition in the context of writing a instructions we will be looking at colons and commas. When we retell the story of Jack we will be adding the suffix -ing and -ed depending whther we are writing in the present or the past. We will practise our phonics, reading and writing set 2 and 3 sounds within words including split digraphs and alternative spellings for the vowel sounds for example e, ee, ea, e-e and y. 

We will be using the handwriting scheme 'Letter Join' to develop our cursive handwriting using leaders and joiners.  

 

In Mathematics we will look at telling the time o'clock and half past, addition, subtraction, simple multiplication and division working beyond 20. 

We will continue to practise counting forwards and backwards to 100 in 2s, 5s and 10s.

 

ICT - Creating a story book adding text and photographs. We will also using presentation software to insert pictures of African animals, sorting and categorizing and answering binary questions.  

 

Design and Technology - the children will be designing and making a  sandwich, thinking about healthy eating. 

 

Science - we will be investigating and comparing life cycles of different animals and each class in KS1 will have a different animal/insect to observe changes over time. The children will also be looking at how they have changed over time.

 

RE - We are finding out about the sacred books in the Christian and Muslim faiths, differences in how beliefs are practised. We will be learning the reasons why we celebrate Easter. 

 

Geography - We will be setting up a weather station to monitor seasonal changes and daily weather conditions within the local environment and comparing to different cities around the world. Identifying and locating the seven continents. Identifying what physical and human features within the environment and locating on a map. Looking at the impact of human activity on the natural environment particularly in relation to an animals habitat. 

 

PHSE - We will look at developing and maintaining good relationships and living a healthy lifestyle. 

 

MUSIC - We will be listening to the Carnival of the Animals by ‘Camille Saint-Saens’ and learning about the composer. We will compose our own piece of music based on an animal choosing instruments to create a specific sound effect. 

 

ART & ICT -  We will learn how to use a paint program to create a piece of  art.

 

FRENCH - In French we will practise holding a simple conversation in French, greeting one another, introducing ourselves, asking how are you.... Bonjour! Je m'apelle ... Cava? Counting to 20 and asking for a quantity, we will also learn animal names in French.

Autumn 2 

Our topic this term is Fire Fire!

 

Literacy

Our first book this term is The Gunpowder Plot which is a non-fiction text.  We will investigate how to retrieve information from a non- fiction book using the contents page and index. We will use our knowledge of the alphabet to use a dictionary and indexes.  We will be writing labels, captions and sentences. We will also be extending our sentences using connectives such as and, because, but.   Within SPAG we will continue to focus on  using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces between our words. In addition in the context of writing a recount we will be adding the suffix -ed to change our writing from the present to the past. We will practise our phonics, reading and writing set 2 sounds within words and also using set 3 sounds including split digraphs and alternative spellings for the vowel sounds for example ay, ai and a-e. 

We will be using the handwriting scheme 'Letter Join' to develop our cursive handwriting using leaders and joiners.  

 

In Mathematics we will continue to work on place value, addition and subtraction generally working within 20 but where appropriate extending to 100. 

We will continue to practise counting forwards and backwards to 100.

We will investigate 2D and 3D shapes identifying, naming and recognising the properties of the shapes - what makes a triangle a triangle.... it's 2d, it has 3 straight sides and 3 corners/vertices.

 

We will be doing lots of measuring, height, length, capacity, weight/mass and time.

 

 

History - We will be learning about the story of the Gunpowder Plot and the Great Fire of London. 

 

ICT - being photographers looking at photographs online and learning how to take good photographs, editing our photos and creating a portfolio of our favourite images. 

 

Design and Technology - the children will be designing and making a  moving puppets with a lever mechanism.

 

Science - we will continue our materials topic investigating different types of material and their properties. We will look at the life and work of the scientist Charles Mackintosh and creating our own waterproof material. We will test materials to find the most suitable to make a boat testing whether it will float and not let in water.

 

RE - We are finding out about people in our class, their culture, beliefs and celebrations.

 

Geography - We will identify London and Manchester on a map of the UK looking at where the Great Fire of London started and Guy Fawkes carried out the Gunpowder plot.  We will locate and identify famous London landmarks, classifying them as human or physical features of the landscape. 

 

PHSE - We will look at how to stay safe around fire linked to Bonfire Night. We will be considering the difference between bullying and teasing and cyber bulling. 

 

MUSIC - We will be listening to the 1812 overture and composing our own piece of music to match a firework choosing instruments to create a specific sound effect. 

We will be learning lots of Christmas songs.

 

ART & ICT -  We will learn how to use a paint program to create a piece of  art.

 

FRENCH - In French we will practise holding a simple conversation in French, greeting one another, introducing ourselves, asking how are you.... Bonjour! Je m'apelle ... Cava? 

We will also learn the colours in French an Christmas vocabulary.

 

Curriculum Enhancements this term...

Becky will be teaching street dance  - practising our moves for the Christmas production, wait until you see our Funky Camels!

 

Mr Busby will be taking the class on a Friday for multi sports, this will take place outside so please ensure the children have their outdoor PE kit - trainers, tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirt in addition to a white t-shirt.  

 

On Wednesday 6th December Year 1 will finish the topic on Toys with a trip to the Liverpool Museum so please remember to pay for the trip through Parent Pay. The children are very excited.

Autumn 1

Our topic is Toys. 

 

In Literacy

We will be focusing on fiction texts and reading Toys in Space by Mini Grey in Literacy. We will analyse the author's vocabulary choices.  We will be writing labels, captions and sentences describing characters, the story setting and making wanted posters.  Within SPAG we will be focusing on  using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces between our words. We will practise our phonics, reading and writing set 2 sounds within words. 

We will be using the handwriting scheme 'Letter Join' to develop our cursive handwriting using leaders and joiners.  This term the focus letters are the long ladder letters l i t j u y. 

 

 

In Mathematics we will be developing our understanding of place value, addition and subtraction generally working within 20 but where appropriate extending to 100. 

We will continue to practise counting forwards and backwards to 100.

 

History - We will be investigating toys throughout history, comparing past and present toys.

Geography - We will locate and name the four countries which make up Great Britain, name and locate their capital cities.  We will locate Denmark on a map and identify physical and human features of the United Kingdom and Denmark investigating the differences between the two places and why.

 

PHSE - We will look at why we have rules and create our own class charter, how to make and keep friends and belonging to a community such as school.

This term Becky will be taking the class for Musical Theatre on a Monday and Street Dance on a Wednesday where we will take part in tableaus developing our acting and improvisation techniques, singing and dancing.

We went on a number hunt writing the numbers we found on a whiteboard. Next we ordered the numbers lowest to highest, we used a number square to help by circling the numbers and following the sequence. 

We're going on a number hunt... I'm going to find a big one!
